Rows vs intensive spacing

The grid method divides bed area by the rectangle each plant needs: in-row spacing times between-row spacing. Tomatoes at 24×36 inches need 6 sq ft each, so a 4×8 bed (32 sq ft) fits floor(32/6) = 5 plants (exact 5.33). Expected yield at 10 lb/plant is about 50 lb. The intensive estimate squares the in-row spacing (2×2 ft = 4 sq ft) for a square-foot style ceiling — 8 tomato plants in that bed — labeled separately because crowding raises disease risk.

Why labeled spacing exists

Seed packets and extension guides build in airflow, root room, and harvest access. Packing peppers shoulder-to-shoulder looks productive in May and fungal in August.
