Rain on a metal roof is inventory if you catch it. Our catchment equation is fixed: gallons = roof sq ft × inches rain × 0.623 × efficiency, with efficiency defaulting to 0.85. The 0.623 factor

One inch of rain on one square foot of catchment is about 0.623 gallons. Multiply by roof area, annual (or monthly) inches, and system efficiency:

That is the locked worked example in our water data. Every 1,000 sq ft of roof at 100% efficiency would catch about 623 gallons per inch of rain; at 85% you keep about 530 gallons per inch.

First-flush and clean-enough water

The first minutes of a storm wash dust, bird droppings, and pollen off the roof. A first-flush diverter sends that slug to waste before the tank. For livestock and garden irrigation that is usually enough hygiene alongside a leaf screen and opaque, sealed storage (light + mosquitoes are the enemy).

Potable household use is a different regulatory and treatment problem. Check state and county rules before you plumb rainwater into drinking lines. Never cross-connect untreated roof water into a municipal potable system.

Storage: autonomy days, not “a big IBC”

Tank volume ≈ daily demand × days of autonomy. Homestead starting points often use 20–30 days between reliable rains (planning habit — not a constant in our water data); arid sites need more; rainy coastal sites may need less storage but still want buffer for dry spells.

Matching roof to herd

Suppose 1,000 sq ft roof, 30 in rain, 85% → ≈ 15,887 gal/year43.5 gal/day averaged across the year. That average can support a surprising animal load on paper — until July yields zero inches for three weeks. Storage and conservation (shade, leak-free troughs, not overflowing duck pools) matter as much as gutter diameter.

Mosquitoes breed in open barrels. Use tight lids and screens. Algae grows in translucent tanks; opaque is kinder.

Gutters, filters, and the efficiency you actually get

The 0.85 default assumes a maintained system. Clogged downspouts, leaf-packed screens, and splash past short gutters push real-world efficiency lower. Walk the roof edge each fall. Screen horizontal runs so nests do not form in the pipe. Place the tank where an overflow can spill to a rain garden or dry well — not into the barn pad.

If you only catch half the house, do the math on that half. A 500 sq ft wing in a 30-inch climate at 0.85 yields about 7,943 gal/year — still useful for chickens and garden beds, not a dairy.

Measure roof footprint (horizontal projection), not fancy roof surface area. Pitch does not multiply the rain that falls on the lot’s rectangle.
