Raising Quail: Feed, Housing & Egg Production Guide

Coturnix quail mature in just 6–8 weeks and produce eggs nearly daily. They are ideal for small lots or urban homesteads where chickens are restricted, requiring minimal space and feed.

Feed needs

Quail eat only 0.05 lb per bird per day — a fraction of chicken feed costs. A covey of 12 uses about 0.6 lb daily.

Space requirements

Coturnix quail need 1 sq ft per bird in a wire-floored cage or aviary. A 2×4 ft cage houses 8 quail comfortably.

Water needs

Quail drink very little — roughly a cup per bird per day. Use shallow dishes or nipple waterers designed for small birds.

Tips for success

• Coturnix hens lay about 250 eggs per year under 14–16 hours of light.
• Feed a game bird crumble at 28% protein for layers — regular chicken layer feed is too low.
• Keep quail in enclosed cages or covered runs — they fly vertically when startled and will escape open-top pens.

Common mistakes

• Housing quail with chickens, which exposes them to diseases they have no immunity to.
• Using chicken layer feed (16% protein) instead of the 28% game bird ration quail need.
